Legislative Update - January 31, 2020

Dear Neighbors,

Preparing for the 2020 legislative session kept me busy last month. Continue reading to learn more about the work I'm doing to make the legislative session a success.

Earlier this month I toured a few North Metro communities with the House Transportation Committee. Highways in that area have some of the highest accident and fatality rates in the state. We were able to learn more about the unique needs of this region and discuss potential solutions with community leaders.

Visiting the third graders at Oak Ridge Elementary School was one of the highlights of my month! I enjoyed reading the book Grace for President to the students and talking about what it's like to be a state representative.

Last week I joined local school officials, city staff, and community members to hear ISD 196's legislative priorities for the upcoming session. I also had the opportunity to see students engaged in some of the many literacy programs that are available.

I plan to attend more events and connect with as many community members as possible before the legislative session begins on February 11. Please feel free to contact me if you'd like to share your thoughts. You can reach me by email at rep.sandra.masin@house.mn or by phone at 651-296-3533.

Gov. Walz and House DFLers Prioritize Emergency Insulin Access
One of my top priorities for 2020 is ensuring that all Minnesotans have access to the medications they need to survive and thrive. It's long past time to pass legislation to help people who are struggling to afford their insulin. Yesterday Governor Walz and my House DFL colleagues announced that they are committed to passing this legislation as soon as possible this year. I hope that Senate Republicans will support the revised Alec Smith Emergency Insulin Act, which is named after a young man who died because he couldn't afford his insulin. MPR published a piece with more information about the proposal. You can read it here.

Be a Voter in the 2020 Presidential Primary
No matter what your party affiliation is, it's important to cast your vote in the 2020 presidential nominating primary. Minnesota's presidential primary will be held on Tuesday, March 3, but absentee ballots are now available for those who want to be among the first in the nation to cast their vote. You can request an absentee ballot or update your voter registration status here.

It's an honor to represent our community. Please stay in touch with questions, ideas, and feedback.

Sincerely,

Sandra Masin
State Representative
